Otherwise coconut oil changes form or gets solid even at 25 degree centigrade. That’s why in winters your coconut gets solid or you can say freeze even in your cozy room. So you don’t need to to freeze it or even refrigerate it, if you are using your coconut oil regularly.
As once refrigerated or frozen it is going to get Damn hard. So for using it regularly I will have to put some effort into melting it. But if you have plenty of coconut oil and it is going to be accessesive for you for more than two years. Then yes! you need to freeze it because it might get spoiled and smelly.
In such conditions if you want to freeze your coconut oil the best way is to freeze it in a silicon freezer tray. As it is flexible and you can easily excavate your coconut oil cubes out of it. Set the coconut oil in all the cubes of the tray. They will take no more than half an hour and they will get rock hard.
You just get them out of the tray, put them in some airtight container that is dry and don’t have any moisture in it. You can even save them in a polythene zipper bag and they are going to stay there forever fresh.
You can bring out one or two cubes as much as you need to be as fresh as they are just extracted from coconut.
- Coconut oil stays in solid forms upto 73° to 74°.
- You need to make sure that you are preserving your coconut oil either in a glass bottle. Or if you are using a plastic bottle it should be 100% BPA free. Otherwise chemical leaching is expected.
- If you have chosen to refrigerate your coconut oil. Before using, put it out at room temperature so it can easily be scooped out. Heating your coconut oil again and again is not all recommended as it might lower down its efficacy.
- It’s better if you can prevent the exposure of light and heat to your coconut oil container. As both these factors affect its shelf life.
- If you are suspicious that your coconut oil is expired. And you are afraid of side-effects that expired coconut oil on skin can cause. You can check its colour and smell. Because when expired or outdated for use, coconut oil colour turns a kind of yellowish and musky. Its smell will not be as pleasant as it was when it was fresh. Or it might develop some mold as well. Because when moisture and coconut oil interact mold development is expected.
- While storing your coconut oil in the freezer for long term use, be careful that you are placing it in a freezer safe container.
- If you are using coconut oil for baking you need it in firm form and for that you can refrigerate it for a few minutes. After that it is firm enough to be handled in baking.

What is white stuff floating in coconut oil?
Sometimes your coconut oil is in a middle stage of liquid and solid. The portion that is liquid is transparent and a few streaks that have gone towards solid side are white. You can just put the oil in your hand and rub it for a while and you will see that the white streak is already dissolved. So basically it is not a foreign body that is making white streaks in your coconut oil it is actually coconut oil in two different states one liquid and one semi solid.
Why Not Expired Coconut oil on skin?
When you are using coconut oil it is not about the expiry date. If you are taking proper care of your coconut oil and preserving it in the best possible manner. Or you have already frozen it you can use it even after its expiry date.
You just need to check that your coconut oil has not turned yellowish in colour or is smelling bad. Mould is also expected to develop in freshly extracted coconut oil so you also need to check that it is free of mould as well. With all these qualities your coconut oil is perfect to use even long after the expiry has gone. But if you feel a colour change or smell change that is unpleasant, even if the expiry is away. I don’t recommend using that coconut oil on your skin and food.
