Yellow beeswax pastilles for DIY skincare
In this article

Beeswax is the natural wax honeybees make to build their honeycomb. On labels it reads Cera Alba (Beeswax). In DIY skincare it’s the trusty hardener — the ingredient that turns soft oils into solid balms, salves, and lotion bars while adding a breathable, protective layer to the skin.

    What It Is

Beeswax is secreted by worker bees and harvested from honeycomb. Yellow (unrefined) beeswax keeps its natural honey scent and golden color; white beeswax is filtered and bleached to be neutral. For DIY it usually comes as easy-to-melt pellets or pastilles. Its job is structure: a small amount thickens liquid oils into a firm, spreadable balm, and it forms a breathable barrier that seals moisture in without fully suffocating the skin.

    ✅ Benefits

    • Natural thickener — turns oils into balms, salves & lotion bars
    • Protective barrier — shields skin while letting it breathe
    • Locks in moisture — reduces water loss from dry skin
    • Long shelf life — extremely stable, won’t go rancid
    • Adds a light sheen — great for lip and hair products
    ⚠️ Cautions

    • Not vegan — for a plant swap use candelilla or carnauba wax
    • High melt point — needs gentle heat (double boiler) to blend
    • Comedogenic (2/5) — fine for most, but heavy layers can feel occlusive

    Best Uses in DIY

Beeswax is essential in lip balm, solid lotion/massage bars, beard balm, and healing salves. Pair it with coconut oil and shea butter — a classic ratio is roughly 1 part beeswax to 3–4 parts oils and butters.

🐝 Recommended: US Organic Yellow Beeswax Pastilles

USDA-certified, 100% pure yellow beeswax in easy-melt pastille form — perfect for lip balms, salves, candles, and lotion bars. Clean-melting and reliably firm.
